Hi, Although my response is late, it is only for future reference. The website seems to be correct and totally legitimate. The gold 1 Rand and 2 Rand coins replaced the ½£ and 1£ coins in 1961 and were minted until 1983. Details of the gold R1 coin from 1965 up to 1983 as follows, (1961 – 1964 differs slightly) The gold content = 0.91667 with copper = 0.0833 (22 ct gold) Weight = 3.99402 g Diameter = 19.4 mm Gold content = 3.66 g Thousands of these coins were melted and are becoming scarce even in South Africa. One can buy many proof sets in "long proof set boxes" without the gold R1 and R2. All the gold were removed from the proof sets. The mintage differ from year to year but for the years 1967, 1969, 1971, 1972 and 1980 an average of 100,000 coins were exported from South Africa to the rest of the World.

2017/18 Hern catalogue indicates the values (in South African Rand) as follows, S123 = Unc R20,000, EF R8,000, VF R2,500 S124 = Unc R5,000, EF R2,500, VF R525

Hi, I noticed that you are still active on the forum. Although your question is from 2011, I will try to assist. You mentioned that you have the "type 2". With that I assume that you refer to the "Hern S124" Protea flower variant. The other variant is the "Hern S123" with the Wreath and not the Protea. The mintage of the "S123" is indicated as 357,584 with the mintage of the "S124" (not indicated) but included in the mintage of the "S123" One "S124" coin is currently on auction (UK Dealer) with an opening bid of £ 1,018 This is a TPG MS63 graded coin, with a "reverse flower". I do not agree with the "reverse flower" as it seems normal and not "reversed" Many South African "Union" silver coins were officially withdrawn from circulation and melted. I will search in my reference books during the weekend with a look at the amount of tickeys officially withdrawn and melted. This corner is not so "common" as it seems to be. Only the 1923, 1931 and 1960 tickeys have lower mintage. Regards
